Update: Dog Reunited with Owner

This dog has been successfully reunited with its owner. Officers were able to identify a microchip, which led to contact with the registered owner residing in La Center. The owner reported the dog was home when they left for work the previous day and was unaware how it ended up in Kalama. The owner was relieved to learn the dog had been safely located. This incident serves as a good reminder of the importance of microchipping pets, as it allows for quick and successful reunification when they become lost.

Public Safety Update - Kalama High School

Earlier today, the Kalama Police Department responded to a report of a potential threat at Kalama High School. Officers immediately coordinated with school staff to ensure the safety of all students and faculty.

After a thorough investigation, officers determined there was no credible threat to the school or the community. The situation has been resolved, and the campus is safe.

We want to thank Kalama School District staff for their quick action and cooperation, as well as the students and parents for their understanding during this incident.

This remains an active investigation, and no additional information will be released at this time.

The Kalama Police Department would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended and supported this year's Shop with a Cop dinner. Thanks to the generosity of our community, over $6K was raised, from this dinner alone, which will allow us to provide even more children a holiday shopping experience this December.

Shop with a cop is one of our most meaningful outreach programs. It helps strengthen the bond between officers and the families we serve while ensuring that every child in our community feels the spirit of the holidays.

We are proud to serve in a city where compassion and partnership continue to make a difference. Thank you, Kalama, for your ongoing support.

KES School Drop Off Map

As the new school year approaches, let’s ensure our students stay safe by following these essential safety tips:

Pedestrian Safety

• Crosswalks: Always use designated crosswalks and obey crossing guards.
• Visibility: Wear bright clothing and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
• Sidewalks: Walk on sidewalks where available; if not, walk facing traffic.

Bicycle Safety

• Helmets: Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
• Bike Lanes: Use bike lanes when available, and follow traffic signals.
• Visibility: Equip your bike with lights and reflective gear, especially in low-light conditions.

School Bus Safety

• Bus Stops: Arrive early at the bus stop and wait in a safe location away from the road.
• Boarding/Exiting: Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting on or off, and cross the street in front of the bus only when the driver signals it’s safe.
• Behavior: Stay seated, keep noise to a minimum, and follow the driver’s instructions.

Distracted Driving

• Focus: Keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions such as texting or eating.
• Speed: Slow down in school zones and be prepared for sudden stops.
• Awareness: Watch for children walking, biking, or getting on and off school buses.

Let’s all do our part to create a safe environment for our students as they head back to school. Stay alert, stay safe!

Happy 4th of July - The city offices and Kalama library will be closed on Friday, July 4th
Just a few more days until Fourth of July festivities!! Historically, much of our community heads down to the Port of Kalama for a fun-filled day of cookouts, fireworks, and cooling off in the river. The shuttle service provided by the City of Kalama this year is intended to alleviate some of the unsafe parking and roadway obstructions we routinely see at the Port of Kalama on the Fourth of July (pictured below from previous years). It is imperative that first responders can get emergency vehicles and apparatus into the area if/when needed, and that we avoid head-on traffic hazards.
Violators parking over fog lines, in areas clearly marked no parking, or otherwise obstructing the flow of traffic will be subject to tow at the owner's expense. Feel free to drop off family members, coolers, etc, and seek appropriate parking or make use of the FREE shuttle service provided (visit the City of Kalama's web page and Facebook posts for more details).

🎆Fireworks season is here🎆— that special time of year when we celebrate the birth of our nation. Every year we respond to dozens of complaints of illegal and improper fireworks use and property damage caused by careless use of fireworks. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel also respond to numerous fireworks related fires and injuries. Please be thoughtful and careful with your fireworks use this year. It is a season to celebrate, but it is also an opportunity for everyone to be good neighbors and considerate of others. FIREWORKS LAWS and SUGGESTIONS According to Washington state law and the Kalama Municipal Code, fireworks may be used at the following times: • June 28 from noon to 11:00 p.m. • June 29 thru July 4 from 9:00am to 11:00pm • July 5 from 9:00am to 9:00pm • Dec. 31 from 6:00pm to Jan. 1 at 1:00am Please be considerate of other residents when using fireworks, especially late in the evenings, around animals, or anyone that could be adversely affected by explosions and loud noises. Remember, fireworks users are responsible for any property damage that may result from their use of the fireworks. Never discharge fireworks at other persons, livestock, or pets. Never discharge fireworks at vehicles or from moving vehicles. Clean up all fireworks debris. Alcohol consumption and fireworks use are a dangerous mix! Children should always be supervised around fireworks. Thanks!

SCAM ALERT: The "Microsoft" Tech Support Scam 🖥️📞 Have you ever seen a pop-up on your computer that says “⚠️ Your system is infected — call Microsoft immediately”? That’s a scam. Here’s how it works: 👨‍💻 Scammers create fake pop-ups that look like real Microsoft alerts. They’ll freeze your screen and display an urgent message claiming your computer is infected or compromised. 📞 The message provides a fake phone number to call for “Microsoft Support.” But here’s the catch — Microsoft will never put their support number in a pop-up. 💬 Once you call, the scammer pretends to be a tech expert. They’ll: • Ask to remote into your computer • Claim they found "viruses" or "hackers" • Pressure you to pay hundreds for fake repairs or software • Sometimes even install real malware to hold your system hostage ⚠️ And if you Google “Microsoft support,” you may still end up calling a scammer — because they buy ads and manipulate search results to trick you into calling fake phone numbers. ✅ Protect yourself: • Never call numbers from pop-ups or random websites • Microsoft will never lock your screen or ask you to call them like this • Close the browser with Ctrl + Alt + Delete if needed • If in doubt, take your computer to a trusted local tech 👊 Stay sharp, Kalama! If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

These names are then read aloud during the annual Candlelight Vigil to memorialize those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
