Fireworks Reminder: This year’s Independence Day celebration is extra special as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate this milestone, we want to remind everyone that fireworks are a fun tradition — but they come with responsibility.
Each year, emergency responders handle fireworks-related complaints, fires, injuries, and property damage caused by unsafe or careless use. Please enjoy the holiday while keeping your neighbors, pets, and community in mind.
FIREWORKS LAWS & SAFETY REMINDERS
According to Washington State law and the Kalama Municipal Code, fireworks may be used only during the following times:
June 28: Noon – 11:00 p.m.
June 29 – July 4: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
July 5: 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Please be considerate when using fireworks, especially during late evening hours and around neighbors, animals, veterans, young children, or anyone who may be sensitive to loud noises. Remember:
• Fireworks users are responsible for any damage caused by their fireworks.
• Never discharge fireworks toward people, animals, vehicles, or from moving vehicles.
• Always clean up fireworks debris after use.
• Alcohol and fireworks do not mix — use fireworks responsibly.
• Children should always be supervised around fireworks.

The Kalama Police Department administrative office will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. As always, police services remain available 24/7 for emergencies and public safety needs.
Yesterday, our First Responders took on the Kalama school teachers in the annual kickball game! It was a great afternoon filled with fun, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs. We’re happy to report that the First Responders are still undefeated! 🎉🚑

I'd like to introduce our newest officer, Joshua Young.
Joshua Young grew up in rural northeast Ohio and moved to Wenatchee, Washington, in 2016, where he attended Eastmont High School and participated in the Running Start program. After graduating, he pursued a career in law enforcement, gaining experience in private security and hospital security, including Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.
Joshua later joined the Grant County Sheriff's Office, graduated from the Southwest Regional Police Academy in February 2023, and served as a deputy. Afterward, he and his spouse relocated to Kalama, where they chose to build their future.
Joshua is honored to be part of this community and grateful for the opportunity to serve and protect its residents.

Last night at the Kalama City Council meeting, Officer Tyler Bailey was presented with a Meritorious Service Award by Chief Satterly for his role in the safe recovery of two endangered missing juveniles last month.

Juvenile Arrested Following Report of Weapon Threat at Kress Lake
On April 25, 2026, at approximately 3:47 p.m., officers with the Kalama Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance involving a possible firearm at Kress Lake. The 911 caller reported a verbal altercation was ongoing and that a subject had allegedly threatened others with a weapon.
Officers responded with lights and sirens and located multiple individuals matching the descriptions. Two juveniles were detained during the investigation.
Through the course of the investigation, officers learned that a juvenile suspect had approached two other juveniles and made threatening statements while concealing an object under his clothing consistent with a firearm. The suspect reportedly displayed a live round of ammunition, causing the victims to fear for their safety.
A search of the area was conducted by an assisting Longview PD Officer and his K9 partner. The K9 located a loaded magazine concealed beneath a log near the parked vehicle. A .22 caliber round was also located on the suspect’s person.
Further investigation led to the impound of a nearby vehicle associated with the incident. After obtaining consent to search, officers located a .22 caliber rifle inside the vehicle.
Based on the totality of the circumstances, one juvenile was arrested and booked into the Cowlitz County Juvenile Detention Facility for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful display of a weapon. A second juvenile was determined not to be involved and was released.
There were no reported injuries associated with this incident.

Community Safety Reminder
The Kalama Police Department takes all reports involving firearms seriously, particularly those involving juveniles. We encourage parents and guardians to ensure firearms are securely stored and inaccessible to unauthorized individuals.
On April 7 at approximately 8:15 a.m., a Kalama Police Officer observed a vehicle exiting southbound at Exit 27. A routine registration check revealed the vehicle was linked to an endangered missing person case out of Wenatchee, Washington.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and, through a thorough investigation, safely located and recovered two juveniles who had been reported as endangered missing. The juveniles were later turned over to Cowlitz County Child Protective Services.
This outcome reflects the dedication and vigilance of the officer. The Kalama Police Department would also like to thank the Woodland Police Department for their support in ensuring the safe recovery of the juveniles.

Update: Dog Reunited with Owner
This dog has been successfully reunited with its owner. Officers were able to identify a microchip, which led to contact with the registered owner residing in La Center. The owner reported the dog was home when they left for work the previous day and was unaware how it ended up in Kalama. The owner was relieved to learn the dog had been safely located. This incident serves as a good reminder of the importance of microchipping pets, as it allows for quick and successful reunification when they become lost.

A friendly female dog was found wandering near Elm Street and Fourth Street and has been turned in to the Kalama Police Department for safekeeping

Public Safety Update - Kalama High School
Earlier today, the Kalama Police Department responded to a report of a potential threat at Kalama High School. Officers immediately coordinated with school staff to ensure the safety of all students and faculty.
After a thorough investigation, officers determined there was no credible threat to the school or the community. The situation has been resolved, and the campus is safe.
We want to thank Kalama School District staff for their quick action and cooperation, as well as the students and parents for their understanding during this incident.
This remains an active investigation, and no additional information will be released at this time.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, over $6K was raised, from this dinner alone, which will allow us to provide even more children a holiday shopping experience this December.
Shop with a cop is one of our most meaningful outreach programs. It helps strengthen the bond between officers and the families we serve while ensuring that every child in our community feels the spirit of the holidays.
